History of Moldova - Antiquity and Early Middle Ages

Antiquity and Early Middle Ages

In recorded antiquity Moldova's territory was inhabited by several tribes, mainly by Dacians, and at different periods also by Bastarnae, Scythians and Sarmatians. Between the I and VII centuries CE, the south was intermittently under the Roman, then Byzantine Empires. Due to its strategic location on a route between Asia and Europe, Moldova was repeatedly invaded, among others, by the Goths, Huns, Avars, Magyars, Kievan Rus', Pechenegs, Cumans, and the Mongols. The First Bulgarian Empire and the colonists of the Genoa Republic also left a trace in this region.

Famous quotes containing the words antiquity, early, middle and/or ages:

We gladly put antiquity above our age but not posterity. Only a father doesn’t begrudge his son’s talent.
    Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (1749–1832)

Early rising is no pleasure; early drinking’s just the measure.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)

The contented and economically comfortable have a very discriminating view of government. Nobody is ever indignant about bailing out failed banks and failed savings and loans associations.... But when taxes must be paid for the lower middle class and poor, the government assumes an aspect of wickedness.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)

Whether in the bringing of the flowers or the food
She offers plenty, and is part of plenty,
And whether I see her stooping, or leaning with the flowers,
What she does is ages old, and she is not simply,
No, but lovely in that way.
    Bernard Spencer (1909–1963)
