Hiram Stevens Maxim - Birth

Birth

Maxim was born in Sangerville, Maine in the United States in 1840. He became an apprentice coachbuilder at the age of 14 and ten years later took up a job at the machine works of his uncle, Levi Stephens, at Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He subsequently worked as an instrument maker and as a draughtsman. (His early jobs in these arenas led him to often be disappointed with workers when he ran his own companies later on in life.)

Famous quotes containing the word birth:

I wouldn’t put it past God to arrange a virgin birth if He wanted, but I very much doubt if He would.
    David Jenkins (b. 1925)

    Spirit enters flesh
    And for all it’s worth
    Charges into earth
    In birth after birth
    Ever fresh and fresh.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

    My demon,
    too often undressed,
too often a crucifix I bring forth,
too often a dead daisy I give water to
too often the child I give birth to
    and then abort....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
