Recent proposals, first by the U.S. Department of Interior and subsequently by the California state government, to remove the dam and restore the valley raise the possibility that the valley may once again be returned to its natural condition (see Restore Hetch Hetchy). However, former Secretary of the Interior Don Hodel recalled in a 2005 op-ed that his proposal in the 1980s had been "met by an unexpected firestorm of opposition from some people who normally favored environmental responsibility and conservation, most notably then-mayor of San Francisco, Dianne Feinstein".

On the November 2012 ballot, citizens in San Francisco voted on whether the city should come up with alternatives to Hetch Hetchy's water and power. The proposal was defeated.

Famous quotes containing the words proposed and/or restoration:

There is no legislation—I care not what it is—tariff, railroads, corporations, or of a general political character, that all equals in importance the putting of our banking and currency system on the sound basis proposed in the National Monetary Commission plan.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

In comparison to the French Revolution, the American Revolution has come to seem a parochial and rather dull event. This, despite the fact that the American Revolution was successful—realizing the purposes of the revolutionaries and establishing a durable political regime—while the French Revolution was a resounding failure, devouring its own children and leading to an imperial despotism, followed by an eventual restoration of the monarchy.
    Irving Kristol (b. 1920)
