Her 1945-1976 papers are available to researchers at the Special Collections department of the Mississippi State University Library. John A. Whalen wrote her biography, Maverick Among the Magnolias: The Hazel Brannon Smith Story, published by Xlibris in 2001. A profile of her can be found in Kathleen Brady's essay "Hazel Brannon Smith: White Martyr for Civil Rights" in the collection "Forgotten Heroes" edited by Susan Ware, published by The Free Press in 1998. Kathleen Brady's treatment of Smith's life was the basis of the ABC-TV movie "A Passion for Justice."
