Birth and Family Life
According to Shia and Sunni sources, Muhammad, upon the birth of his grandson in 3 AH, was ordered by the archangel Gabriel to name him Hasan - a name not used in the pre-Islamic period. Muhammad also honoured his grandson by reciting the Adhān in his right ear, the Iqāmah in his left ear, shaving his head, and sacrificing a ram for the sake of his birth.
He married nine women:
- Um Kulthum bint Alfadhl bin Al-Abbas bin Abdulmuttalib bin Hashim
- Khawla bint Mandhoor bin Zaban bin Syar bin Amro
- Um Basheer bint Abi Mas'ud
- Ju'da bint Al-Ash'ath bin Qays Ma'di Karb Alkindi
- Um Ishaq bint Talha bin Ubaydillah bin Uthman Al-Taymi
- Zainab bint Sabee' bin Abdullah
- Baqliya
- Dhamya'
- Safia

Famous quotes containing the words birth, family and/or life:
“The warped, distorted frame we have put around every Negro child from birth is around every white child also. Each is on a different side of the frame but each is pinioned there. And ... what cruelly shapes and cripples the personality of one is as cruelly shaping and crippling the personality of the other.”
—Lillian Smith (18971966)
“Parenting is not logical. If it were, we would never have to read a book, never need a family therapist, and never feel the urge to call a close friend late at night for support after a particularly trying bedtime scene. . . . We have moments of logic, but life is run by a much larger force. Life is filled with disagreement, opposition, illusion, irrational thinking, miracle, meaning, surprise, and wonder.”
—Jeanne Elium (20th century)
“For all the boredom the straight life brings, its not too bad.”
—Gus Van Sant, U.S. screenwriter and director, and Dan Yost. Bob Hughes (Matt Dillon)
