Elections to the council are held in three out of every four years, with one third of the 35 seats on the council being elected at each election. From the 2000 election to 2005 the Conservative party had a majority on the council. Until 2010 it was under no overall control. Famous quotes containing the word politics:

I have come to the conclusion that the closer people are to what may be called the front lines of government ... the easier it is to see the immediate underbrush, the individual tree trunks of the moment, and to forget the nobility the usefulness and the wide extent of the forest itself.... They forget that politics after all is only an instrument through which to achieve Government.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

It is not so much that women have a different point of view in politics as that they give a different emphasis. And this is vastly important, for politics is so largely a matter of emphasis.
    Crystal Eastman (1881–1928)

The politics of the family are the politics of a nation. Just as the authoritarian family is the authoritarian state in microcosm, the democratic family is the best training ground for life in a democracy.
    Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)
