    James Russell Lowell (1819–91)

Life is a series of diminishments. Each cessation of an activity either from choice or some other variety of infirmity is a death, a putting to final rest. There are risks which are not acceptable: the destruction of humanity is one of them.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

Children cannot eat rhetoric and they cannot be sheltered by commissions. I don’t want to see another commission that studies the needs of kids. We need to help them.
    Marian Wright Edelman (b. 1939)
