This gives it a ranking of 162nd in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 233 inhabitants per square kilometre (600 /sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 17.94%. Gulbarga has a sex ratio of 962 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 65.65%.
Kannada is the predominant language spoken in this district. Dakhni Urdu are also spoken in this district. Hinduism and Islam are principle religions followed in this district. The Urdu speaking Muslim population is heavily influenced by Hyderabad.
