A green room in show business lexicon in British and American English is the space in a theatre, studio or similar venue which accommodates performers not yet required on stage. The green room functions as a waiting room and lounge for performers before and after a performance, and during the show when they are not engaged onstage.
The origin of the term is often ascribed to such rooms historically being painted green, yet the modern "green room" is usually not green at all.

Famous quotes containing the words green and/or room:
“Thou hast conquered, O pale Galilean; the world has grown grey from thy breath;
We have drunken of things Lethean; and fed on the fullness of death.
Laurel is green for a season, and love is sweet for a day;
But love grows bitter with treason, and laurel outlives not May.
Sleep, shall we sleep after all? for the world is not sweet in the
end;
For the old faiths loosen and fall, the new years ruin and rend.”
—A.C. (Algernon Charles)
“When you see the abyss, and we have looked into it, then what? There isnt much room at the edgeone person, another, not many. If you are there, others cannot be there. If you are there, you become a protective wall. What happens? You become part of the abyss.”
—Elie Wiesel (b. 1928)
