Greater Glasgow - Glasgow City Region

The Glasgow City Region, is a collection of local authorities clustered around Glasgow. The eight constituent authorities are:

  • Glasgow
  • East Dunbartonshire
  • West Dunbartonshire
  • North Lanarkshire
  • South Lanarkshire
  • East Renfrewshire
  • Renfrewshire
  • Inverclyde

The estimated population of this area in 2007 was 1,750,500. The city region is not a conurbation as significant parts of the council areas (and the whole of Inverclyde) are separated from Greater Glasgow by open countryside. It uses numerous other terms for itself, including Metropolitan Glasgow, the metropolitan City-Region of Glasgow" and Glasgow and the Clyde Valley. The city region has no single municipal government, the eight authorities instead form a combined strategic planning authority.

Famous quotes containing the words glasgow, city and/or region:

I was always a feminist, for I liked intellectual revolt as much as I disliked physical violence. On the whole, I think women have lost something precious, but have gained, immeasurably, by the passing of the old order.
    —Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945)

A city on whom plenty held full hand,
    For riches strewed herself even in her streets;
Whose towers bore heads so high they kissed the clouds,
And strangers ne’er beheld but wondered at.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

It was the most wild and desolate region we had camped in, where, if anywhere, one might expect to meet with befitting inhabitants, but I heard only the squeak of a nighthawk flitting over. The moon in her first quarter, in the fore part of the night, setting over the bare rocky hills garnished with tall, charred, and hollow stumps or shells of trees, served to reveal the desolation.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
