Great Bookham - Sport and Leisure

Sport and Leisure

Great Bookham has a Non-League football club Bookham F.C. who play at the Chrystie Recreation Ground in the Combined Counties Premier Division with all the new teams coming into it from the Ryman League. The club was founded prior to World War I. The town is also home to Reading University Badminton Captain 2010/11 James Goodman, who successfully led the squad to safety during a potentially perilous campaign.

Famous quotes containing the words sport and/or leisure:

Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain,
Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain,
Where smiling spring its earliest visit paid,
And parting summer’s lingering blooms delayed,
Dear lovely bowers of innocence and ease,
Seats of my youth, when every sport could please,
How often have I loitered o’er the green,
Where humble happiness endeared each scene.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1730?–1774)

The idea that leisure is of value in itself is only conditionally true.... The average man simply spends his leisure as a dog spends it. His recreations are all puerile, and the time supposed to benefit him really only stupefies him.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)
