Name Origin and Family
In the Charles Addams cartoons, Gomez — as with all of the members of the family — had no given name. When the 1964 television series The Addams Family was being developed, Charles Addams suggested naming the character either Repelli or Gomez. Addams left the final choice up to actor John Astin, who chose Gomez. Gomez is the husband of Morticia Addams whom he always kisses when she speaks French, son (or, in some incarnations of the family, son-in-law) to Grandmama Addams, nephew-in-law (or sometimes brother) to Uncle Fester, and father to Wednesday and Pugsley. Gomez also has a butler named Lurch and a cousin, Itt. Gomez's paternal grandfather was Grandpa Squint Addams, who was the son of Pegleg Addams; oddly, Gomez's paternal grandmother was also named Squint.
The name "Gómez" is usually recognized as a family name in Spanish-speaking countries. In Spanish America, the character's name was changed to "Homero" ("Homer"). In Brazil the name remained Gomez.

Famous quotes containing the words origin and/or family:
“Each structure and institution here was so primitive that you could at once refer it to its source; but our buildings commonly suggest neither their origin nor their purpose.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Nothing strengthens the judgment and quickens the conscience like individual responsibility. Nothing adds such dignity to character as the recognition of ones self-sovereignty; the right to an equal place, everywhere concededa place earned by personal merit, not an artificial attainment by inheritance, wealth, family and position.”
