  • In the movie "Full Metal Jacket" by Stanley Kubrick, the nickname "Gomer Pyle" is given to Private Leonard Lawrence (played by Vincent D'Onofrio) during basic training, after incurring the drill instructor's wrath (Gunnery Sergeant Hartman played by R. Lee Ermey) by being unable to turn off his idiot's grin.
  • "Gomer Pyle" has become U.S.M.C. slang for a recruit who continually messes up or needs extra training.
