God Bless America

"God Bless America" is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918 and revised by him in 1938. The later version has notably been recorded by Kate Smith, becoming her signature song.

"God Bless America" takes the form of a prayer (intro lyrics "as we raise our voices, in a solemn prayer") for God's blessing and peace for the nation ("...stand beside her and guide her through the night...").

Famous quotes containing the words god, bless and/or america:

    “We should have to be God ourselves!”MWith a phrase so startling as this yet ringing in my ears, I nevertheless venture to demand if this our present ignorance of the Deity is an ignorance to which the soul is everlastingly condemned.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

    I see the moon,
    And the moon sees me;
    God bless the moon,
    And God bless me.
    —Unknown. I See the Moon (l. 1–6)

    His singing carried me back to the period of the discovery of America ... when Europeans first encountered the simple faith of the Indian. Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
