Gilbert Burnet - Glorious Revolution

Glorious Revolution

William landed at Torbay on 5 November. When Burnet came ashore he hastened to William and eagerly inquired of what William now intended to do. William regarded the interference in military matters by non-military personnel with disgust but he was in good humour at this moment and responded with a delicate reproof: "Well, Doctor, what do you think of predestination now?"

Burnet was appointed to preach the coronation sermon on 11 April 1689.

Famous quotes containing the words glorious and/or revolution:

    Most glorious Lord of life! that, on this day,
    Didst make thy triumph over death and sin;
    And, having harrowed hell, didst bring away
    Captivity thence captive, us to win:
    Edmund Spenser (1552?–1599)

    The heritage of the American Revolution is forgotten, and the American government, for better and for worse, has entered into the heritage of Europe as though it were its patrimony—unaware, alas, of the fact that Europe’s declining power was preceded and accompanied by political bankruptcy, the bankruptcy of the nation-state and its concept of sovereignty.
    Hannah Arendt (1906–1975)
