Gibbs' Phase Rule - Phase Rule at Constant Pressure

Phase Rule At Constant Pressure

Condensed systems have no gas phase. When their properties are insensitive to the (small) changes in pressure which occur, one fewer variable needs to be specified, which results in the phase rule at constant pressure

F = C − P + 1 ,

This is sometimes misleadingly called the "condensed phase rule", but it is not applicable to condensed systems which are subject to high pressures (for example in geology), since the effects of these pressures can be important. The rule is useful for some applications in materials science.

Famous quotes containing the words phase, rule, constant and/or pressure:

    It no longer makes sense to speak of “feeding problems” or “sleep problems” or “negative behavior” is if they were distinct categories, but to speak of “problems of development” and to search for the meaning of feeding and sleep disturbances or behavior disorders in the developmental phase which has produced them.
    Selma H. Fraiberg (20th century)

    To me the “female principle” is, or at least historically has been, basically anarchic. It values order without constraint, rule by custom not by force. It has been the male who enforces order, who constructs power structures, who makes, enforces, and breaks laws.
    Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929)

    Henry David Thoreau, who never earned much of a living or sustained a relationship with any woman that wasn’t brotherly—who lived mostly under his parents’ roof ... who advocated one day’s work and six days “off” as the weekly round and was considered a bit of a fool in his hometown ... is probably the American writer who tells us best how to live comfortably with our most constant companion, ourselves.
    Edward Hoagland (b. 1932)

    Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)
