3FM Serious Request
Just before Christmas 2005, from Monday 19 December until Saturday 24 December, Ekdom, together with colleagues Giel Beelen and Wouter van der Goes, created the show 3FM Serious Request. During the full length of this show, broadcasted on radio 24 hours per day, they would reside the good part of a week in a socalled 'glass house', this without any food. The radio listeners were able to request tracks against a small fee, which was then donated to the charity for the victims of war in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ever since that event the radiostation organises a yearly Serious Request on behalf of a different charity.
- 2006 Giel Beelen, Gerard Ekdom, Sander Lantinga against landmines
- 2007 Gerard Ekdom, Michiel Veenstra, Rob Stenders for drinkingwater
- 2008 Giel Beelen, Paul Rabbering, Coen Swijnenberg for refugees
- 2009 Gerard Ekdom, Giel Beelen, Annemieke Schollaard against malaria
- 2010 Gerard Ekdom, Giel Beelen, Coen Swijnenberg against aids
A year earlier, this charity show had won a Marconi Award. In 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 Ekdom entered the house again, every year making it an even greater success than the year before.

Famous quotes containing the word request:
“Were all the worshippers of the gold calf to memorialize me and request a restoration of the deposits I would cut my right hand from my body before I would do such an act. The gold calf may be worshipped by others but as for myself I serve the Lord.”
