The Georgia Aquarium, located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, at Pemberton Place, is currently the world's second largest aquarium with more than 8.5 million US gallons (32,000 m3) of marine and freshwater, housing more than 120,000 animals in 500 different species (as of November 22, 2012, the world's largest aquarium is the S.E.A. Aquarium located at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, which contains 12 million US gallons (45,000 m3) of water). The aquarium's notable specimens include four young whale sharks, four beluga whales, eleven bottlenose dolphins and four manta rays.
Funded mostly by a US$250 million donation from Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus, the aquarium was built on a 20-acre (8.1 ha) site north of Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. Marcus credited his 60th birthday dinner at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 1990 among the inspirations behind his desire to build an aquarium in Atlanta.

“The Aquarium is gone. Everywhere,
giant finned cars nose forward like fish;
a savage servility
slides by on grease.”
