George Vertue (1684 – July 24, 1756) was an English engraver and antiquary, whose notebooks on British art of the first half of the 18th century are a valuable source for the period.
Famous quotes containing the words george and/or vertue:
“Bonnie George Campbell rode out on a day.
He saddled, he bridled, and gallant rode he,
And hame cam his guid horse, but never cam he.”
—Unknown. Bonnie George Campbell (l. 24)
“Though beautie be the marke of praise,
And yours of whom I sing be such
As not the world can praise too much,
Yet ist your vertue now I raise.”
—Ben Jonson (15721637)
