George Hendrik Breitner - Art Market

Art Market

The highest price recorded for a Breitner painting at a public auction was the €$582,450 paid by Robert Noortman at Christie's, Amsterdam, in October 2003 for Girl in a Red Kimono. The model for the painting was Geesje Kwak (see Dutch Wikipedia article), the subject of a series of seven paintings and studies by Breitner of a girl dressed in a red or white kimono lying on a bed or standing before a mirror. The painting is considered a high point of Dutch Japonisme.

In April 2005, Rokin with the Nieuwezijdskapel, Amsterdam realised €415,200 at Christie's, Amsterdam.

Famous quotes containing the words art and/or market:

Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
    Bible: New Testament Acts, 26:24.

Said by Festus, the Roman Procurator.

Writing ought either to be the manufacture of stories for which there is a market demand—a business as safe and commendable as making soap or breakfast foods—or it should be an art, which is always a search for something for which there is no market demand, something new and untried, where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)
