Definition and Motivation
A generic point of the topological space X is a point P whose closure is all of X, that is, a point that is dense in X.
The terminology arises from the case of the Zariski topology of algebraic varieties. For example having a generic point is a criterion to be an irreducible set.

Famous quotes containing the words definition and/or motivation:
“Beauty, like all other qualities presented to human experience, is relative; and the definition of it becomes unmeaning and useless in proportion to its abstractness. To define beauty not in the most abstract, but in the most concrete terms possible, not to find a universal formula for it, but the formula which expresses most adequately this or that special manifestation of it, is the aim of the true student of aesthetics.”
—Walter Pater (18391894)
“Self-determination has to mean that the leader is your individual gut, and heart, and mind or were talking about power, again, and its rather well-known impurities. Who is really going to care whether you live or die and who is going to know the most intimate motivation for your laughter and your tears is the only person to be trusted to speak for you and to decide what you will or will not do.”
—June Jordan (b. 1939)
