General Hospital - Setting

Setting

Many sites in Port Charles include:

  • General Hospital was founded by Dr. Steve Hardy. It is a major employer in the city, and one of the largest medical facilities on the East Coast. With contributions from Sonny Corinthos and Carly Benson, extra wings dedicated to AIDS research and pediatric head neurology have been constructed. In 2009, a vicious fire destroyed a majority of the hospital, which was promptly rebuilt. The hospital re-opened in April.
  • The Metro Court is the most prominent hotel in Port Charles, owned by entrepreneurs Jasper Jacks and Carly Benson. Now co-owned by Kate Howard and Carly Benson. When the Port Charles Hotel was destroyed by a fire in 2004 due to faulty wiring, the Metro Court was built on its site. The hotel boasts a skyline restaurant, a world-class spa, and multiple penthouse suites. It was also the place where Crimson Magazine was produced, contributed to by Jax and run by Kate. In 2012, Todd Manning ultimately bought out Crimson Magazine (although still in production) and changed it to Manning Enterprises with new newspaper THE SUN while Kate was out of commission due to her D.I.D.
  • Kelly's Diner founded by the late Paddy Kelly, is a vintage restaurant in the heart of Port Charles. Operated by Mike Corbin, the diner has been serving its devoted patrons since 1978. The lofts above Kelly's have been home to hundreds of tenants over the years, although the rooms are currently vacant.
  • The Haunted Star is a yacht owned and operated by Luke Spencer, who received the vessel as a wedding present in 1983. In 2003, the ship was turned into a casino by Luke and investors Skye Chandler and Tracy Quartermaine. In 2012, Johnny Zacchara and Lulu Spencer turned the ship into a nightclub after Johnny signed aspiring singer and former Llanview, Pennsylvania resident Starr Manning to his record label, and also letting Starr perform at The Haunted Star to further promote her pop music career.
  • Jake's is a bar located in downtown Port Charles, just a block away from General Hospital. Since the early 1990s, the bar has been a hotspot for the local nightlife. Coleman Ratcliffe has owned the bar since 2002. In 2012, it was renamed after a vintage nightspot that has been closed since the early 80's, The Floating Rib.

Prominent families include the Scorpios, the Quartermaines, the Cassadines, the Spencers, and the Corinthos'. Minor families include the Mannings, the Morgans, and the Falconeris.

Famous quotes containing the word setting:

“Oh, let’s go up the hill and scare ourselves,
As reckless as the best of them tonight,
By setting fire to all the brush we piled
With pitchy hands to wait for rain or snow....”
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Dandyism is the last flicker of heroism in decadent ages.... Dandyism is a setting sun; like the declining star, it is magnificent, without heat and full of melancholy. But alas! the rising tide of democracy, which spreads everywhere and reduces everything to the same level, is daily carrying away these last champions of human pride, and submerging, in the waters of oblivion, the last traces of these remarkable myrmidons.
    Charles Baudelaire (1821–1867)
