History
Gangs have been present in the United States for a long period of time. The violent crime based gangs became present in the early 1900's. Gangs back in the 1920's differ from the gangs today. Back then the prevalent gangs were the Italian Mafia, the different families in particular cities were the divided crews. As time went on and as the United States were changing rapidly race became a big factor in creating the gangs that we know today. When blacks protested against the segregation they created gangs to become stronger. These groups evolved over time and grew larger and larger. Today there are over 33,000 different gangs in the United States including 1.4 million members.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Most events recorded in history are more remarkable than important, like eclipses of the sun and moon, by which all are attracted, but whose effects no one takes the trouble to calculate.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“I am ashamed to see what a shallow village tale our so-called History is. How many times must we say Rome, and Paris, and Constantinople! What does Rome know of rat and lizard? What are Olympiads and Consulates to these neighboring systems of being? Nay, what food or experience or succor have they for the Esquimaux seal-hunter, or the Kanaka in his canoe, for the fisherman, the stevedore, the porter?”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
