In 2007, GSN began to expand into online gaming when Liberty Media acquired the Toronto-based FUN Technologies, operator of the popular online tournament casual gaming website WorldWinner. Liberty promptly began to integrate and promote the site as a part of Game Show Network—envisioning the potential for cross-promotion for game show properties between the two services. Its rationale for the acquisition was a desire to transform GSN into a recognizable brand for skill games as much as CNN is a well-known brand in news.
GSN used the momentum from the WorldWinner merger to launch a Facebook social gaming app, now known as Games by GSN featuring skill and casino games along with competitive tournaments. Mesmo has been a success for GSN—by October 2010, Games by GSN had over 8 million active users. GSN also developed a Wheel of Fortune app for Facebook, released in 2010.
