Gafftopsail Catfish - Weight and Length

Weight and Length

The largest recorded weight for a gafftopsail catfish is 4.5 kg (10 lb). A more common weight and length of gafftopsails caught is 1-2 lb and 12-16 inches.

As gafftopsail catfish grow longer, they increase in weight, but the relationship is not linear. The relationship between total length (L, in inches) and total weight (W, in pounds) for nearly all species of fish can be expressed by an equation of the form:

Invariably, b is close to 3.0 for all species, and the constant ct varies between species. Data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission indicate, for the gafftopsail catfish, c = 0.000493 and b = 3.075 The relationship described in this section suggests a 12-inch gafftopsail catfish will weigh about one pound, while a 20-inch fish will likely weigh about five pounds.

Famous quotes containing the words weight and, weight and/or length:

It will be seen that we contemplate a time when man’s will shall be law to the physical world, and he shall no longer be deterred by such abstractions as time and space, height and depth, weight and hardness, but shall indeed be the lord of creation.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

But I saw the little-Ant men as they ran
Carrying the world’s weight of the world’s filth
And the filth in the heart of Man—
Compressed till those lusts and greeds had a greater heat
    than that of the Sun.
    Dame Edith Sitwell (1887–1964)

And my spirit is grown to a lordly great compass within,
That the length and the breadth and the sweep of the marshes of
    Glynn
Will work me no fear like the fear they have wrought me of yore
When length was failure, and when breadth was but bitterness sore,
And when terror and shrinking and dreary unnamable pain
Drew over me out of the merciless miles of the plain,—
Oh, now, unafraid, I am fain to face
The vast sweet visage of space.
    Sidney Lanier (1842–1881)
