Social Impact

According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day making it the most feared day and date in history. "It's been estimated that $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day". Famous quotes containing the words social and/or impact:

As social beings we live with our eyes upon our reflection, but have no assurance of the tranquillity of the waters in which we see it.
    Charles Horton Cooley (1864–1929)

Too many existing classrooms for young children have this overriding goal: To get the children ready for first grade. This goal is unworthy. It is hurtful. This goal has had the most distorting impact on five-year-olds. It causes kindergartens to be merely the handmaidens of first grade.... Kindergarten teachers cannot look at their own children and plan for their present needs as five-year-olds.
James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)
