Freedomland U.S.A. - Opening

Opening

On June 18, 1960, Freedomland was dedicated in a ceremony with 5,000 people in attendance. The following day, June 19, the park officially opened with 65,000 visitors. That same evening, The Ed Sullivan Show presented a promotional tour of the park and referred to it as Disneyland's equal on the East Coast.

On June 20, the second day of operation, Freedomland was forced to stop selling tickets because of traffic jams leading to the park.

Freedomland's operating hours were from 9:30 am until midnight (later 10 am to midnight), seven days a week, from May through October. The Moon Bowl was also opened for occasional off-season performances.

Famous quotes containing the word opening:

The appetite for power, even for universal power, is only insane when there is no possibility of indulging it; a man who sees the possibility opening before him and does not try to grasp it, even at the risk of destroying himself and his country, is either a saint or a mediocrity.
    Simone Weil (1909–1943)

    Haven’t you heard, though,
About the ships where war has found them out
At sea, about the towns where war has come
Through opening clouds at night with droning speed
Further o’erhead than all but stars and angels
And children in the ships and in the towns?
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

But every insight from this realm of thought is felt as initial, and promises a sequel. I do not make it; I arrive there, and behold what was there already. I make! O no! I clap my hands in infantine joy and amazement, before the first opening to me of this august magnificence, old with the love and homage of innumerable ages, young with the life of life, the sunbright Mecca of the desert.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
