Francis of Paola - Veganism and Compassion Towards Animals

Veganism and Compassion Towards Animals

He followed a vegan diet, not only free from animal flesh, but also from all animal derived foods, such as eggs and dairy products. One of the vows of the order he founded was the abstinence from meat, fish, eggs, butter, cheese and milk. There are several stories about his compassion for animals, and how he gave back life to animals that were killed to be eaten.

Famous quotes containing the words compassion and/or animals:

Let us have compassion for those under chastisement. Alas, who are we ourselves? Who am I and who are you? Whence do we come and is it quite certain that we did nothing before we were born? This earth is not without some resemblance to a gaol. Who knows but that man is a victim of divine justice? Look closely at life. It is so constituted that one senses punishment everywhere.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)

What distinguished man from animals was the human capacity for symbolic thought, the capacity which was inseparable from the development of language in which words were not mere signals, but signifiers of something other than themselves. Yet the first symbols were animals. What distinguished men from animals was born of their relationship with them.
    John Berger (b. 1926)
