A fountain square is a park or plaza in a city that features a fountain. A fountain square is similar to a town square but is usually smaller and not situated in front of the town hall or county courthouse. It may stand alone or as part of a larger public park.
In the United States, there are numerous fountain squares, many of which are actually called "Fountain Square." There are fountain squares in places such as Indianapolis, Indiana; Evanston, Illinois; Bloomington, Indiana; and Bowling Green, Kentucky. The fountain square in Cincinnati, Ohio has continued to be a popular tourist attraction for more than 100 years; its famous Tyler Davidson Fountain are shown in the opening credits of the TV series WKRP in Cincinnati.
Fountains Square in Baku, Azerbaijan, is one of the country's most famous tourist destinations.
Famous quotes containing the words fountain and/or square:
“In marble halls as white as milk,
Lined with a skin as soft as silk,
Within a fountain crystal-clear,
A golden apple doth appear.
No doors there are to this stronghold,
Yet thieves break in and steal the gold.”
—Mother Goose (fl. 17th18th century. In marble walls as white as milk (Riddle: An Egg)
“If magistrates had true justice, and if physicians had the true art of healing, they would have no occasion for square caps; the majesty of these sciences would of itself be venerable enough. But having only imaginary knowledge, they must employ those silly tools that strike the imagination with which they have to deal; and thereby, in fact, they inspire respect.”
—Blaise Pascal (16231662)
