The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) describes itself as a non-profit, non-partisan policy institute "working to defend free nations against their enemies". It was founded shortly after the September 11, 2001, attacks to address what it regards as the "threat facing America, Israel and the West". Its stated objectives are promoting human rights, defending "free and democratic nations", and opposing terrorism which it defines as "the deliberate use of violence against civilians to achieve political objectives".

“The poet needs a ground in popular tradition on which he may work, and which, again, may restrain his art within the due temperance. It holds him to the people, supplies a foundation for his edifice; and, in furnishing so much work done to his hand, leaves him at leisure, and in full strength for the audacities of his imagination.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The cliché organizes life; it expropriates peoples identity; it becomes ruler, defense lawyer, judge, and the law.”
—Václav Havel (b. 1936)
