Foreign Relations of Sweden - United Nations

United Nations

Sweden has been a member of the United Nations since 19 November 1946, and participates actively in the activities of the organisation, including as an elected member of the Security Council (1957–1958, 1975–1976 and 1997–1998), providing Dag Hammarskjöld as the second elected Secretary-General of the UN, etc. The strong interest of the Swedish Government and people in international cooperation and peacemaking has been supplemented in the early 1980s by renewed attention to Nordic and European security questions.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or nations:

Prior to the meeting, there was a prayer. In general, in the United States there was always praying.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

The UN is not just a product of do-gooders. It is harshly real. The day will come when men will see the UN and what it means clearly. Everything will be all right—you know when? When people, just people, stop thinking of the United Nations as a weird Picasso abstraction, and see it as a drawing they made themselves.
    Dag Hammarskjöld (1905–1961)
