Fore Street

Fore Street

"Fore Street": a name often used for the main street of a town or village. Usage is almost entirely confined to the south west of England but it does also occur in some other parts of the country. There is also a Fore Street in Portland, Maine, United States, presumably named by colonists from SW England. The prevalence of streets named "Fore Street" in Cornwall is due to a survival from the Cornish language -"Forth" = "Street". There are over seventy "Fore Streets" in Cornwall and about seventy five in Devon.

The name is to equivalent to the "High Street" of SE England and the "Main Street" of the rest of the country.

Famous quotes containing the words fore and/or street:

It was the most wild and desolate region we had camped in, where, if anywhere, one might expect to meet with befitting inhabitants, but I heard only the squeak of a nighthawk flitting over. The moon in her first quarter, in the fore part of the night, setting over the bare rocky hills garnished with tall, charred, and hollow stumps or shells of trees, served to reveal the desolation.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The skyscraper establishes the block, the block creates the street, the street offers itself to man.
    Roland Barthes (1915–1980)
