Sound
The FM Towns system was able to play regular audio CDs, and also supported the use of eight PCM voices and six FM channels, thanks to Ricoh RF5c68 and Yamaha YM2612 chipsets, respectively. The system had ports in the front to accommodate Karaoke, LEDs to indicate volume level, and software to add popular voice-altering effects such as echoes.
Games on the FM Towns regularly used Red Book (audio CD standard) orchestral music tracks, especially if they were designed specifically for the Fujitsu system (Games ported from the PC9801, for instance, might have used only PCM/FM music). This was a novelty and innovation far ahead of other PCs of the time made possible by the standard CD-ROM drive in every FM Towns computer.

Famous quotes containing the word sound:
“A system of morality which is based on relative emotional values is a mere illusion, a thoroughly vulgar conception which has nothing sound in it and nothing true.”

“There was a sound of revelry by night,
And Belgiums capital had gathered then
Her beauty and her chivalry, and bright
The lamps shone oer fair women and brave men;
A thousand hearts beat happily; and when
Music arose with its voluptuous swell,
Soft eyes looked love to eyes which spake again,
And all went merry as a marriage-bell;
But hush! hark! a deep sound strikes like a rising knell!”
—George Gordon Noel Byron (17881824)
“When the sheep are in the fauld, and the kye at hame,
And a the warld to rest are gane,
The waes o my heart fa in showers frae my ee,
While my gudeman lies sound by me.
Young Jamie loed me weel, and sought me for his bride;”
—Lady Anne Lindsay (17501825)
