Flying Bedstead - Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (1960s)

Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (1960s)

The second aircraft known as the Flying Bedstead was the LLRV (Lunar Landing Research Vehicle) and LLTV (Lunar Landing Training Vehicle) developed by the United States in the 1960s as part of the Apollo program and intended for studying piloting techniques for use by the astronauts destined for the moon landings in the Apollo Lunar Module. During one of his flights in an LLRV, X-15 pilot and future Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong had to eject when the control system of the Flying Bedstead failed and the vehicle crashed. Two of the LLTVs also crashed due to similar control-system failures. Despite these incidents, the vehicles were praised as excellent trainers for the actual lunar landings.

Famous quotes containing the words lunar, landing, research and/or vehicle:

A bird half wakened in the lunar noon
Sang halfway through its little inborn tune.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

I foresee the time when the painter will paint that scene, no longer going to Rome for a subject; the poet will sing it; the historian record it; and, with the Landing of the Pilgrims and the Declaration of Independence, it will be the ornament of some future national gallery, when at least the present form of slavery shall be no more here. We shall then be at liberty to weep for Captain Brown. Then, and not till then, we will take our revenge.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

If politics is the art of the possible, research is surely the art of the soluble. Both are immensely practical-minded affairs.
    Peter B. Medawar (1915–1987)

If you would learn to write, ‘t is in the street you must learn it. Both for the vehicle and for the aims of fine arts you must frequent the public square. The people, and not the college, is the writer’s home.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
