Florida Air Academy - History

History

Ernest Kouwen-Hoven built the main building in 1923 as a residence. It is Mediterranean Revival architecture. He owned it one year until selling it to an owner who turned it into the Lincoln Hotel. August J. Rimer, an original owner of the Green Bay Packers bought it in 1957 and renamed the hotel the Barcelona.

In 1961 Jonathan Dwight bought the building and founded the Florida Air Academy. He and his wife, Emmy, attempted to pattern the school on the United States Air Force Academy. In 2012, the school continues to be a family business.

In 2012, there were 280 students.

In 2013, the school decided to relinquish football as a school sport. It finished with a 5-5 record, but was faced with upgrading its classification from 2A to 3A. After a 10 year absence, the school had reinstated football in 2004.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Man watches his history on the screen with apathy and an occasional passing flicker of horror or indignation.
    Conor Cruise O’Brien (b. 1917)

It may be well to remember that the highest level of moral aspiration recorded in history was reached by a few ancient Jews—Micah, Isaiah, and the rest—who took no count whatever of what might not happen to them after death. It is not obvious to me why the same point should not by and by be reached by the Gentiles.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

I cannot be much pleased without an appearance of truth; at least of possibility—I wish the history to be natural though the sentiments are refined; and the characters to be probable, though their behaviour is excelling.
    Frances Burney (1752–1840)
