Fletcher Christian - Movie Portrayals

Movie Portrayals

Christian was portrayed in films by:

  • Wilton Power in The Mutiny of the Bounty (1916)
  • Errol Flynn in In the Wake of the Bounty (1933)
  • Clark Gable in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
  • Marlon Brando in Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)
  • Mel Gibson in The Bounty (1984)

The 1935 and 1962 films are based on the 1932 novel Mutiny on the Bounty in which Christian is a major character and is generally portrayed positively. The authors of that novel, Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, also wrote two sequels, one of which, Pitcairn's Island, is the story of the tragic events after the mutiny that apparently resulted in Christian’s death along with other violent deaths on Pitcairn Island. (The other sequel, Men Against the Sea, is the story of Bligh's voyage after the mutiny.) This series of novels uses fictionalized versions of minor crew members as narrators of the stories.

Famous quotes containing the words movie and/or portrayals:

... the movie woman’s world is designed to remind us that a woman may live in a mansion, an apartment, or a yurt, but it’s all the same thing because what she really lives in is the body of a woman, and that body is allowed to occupy space only according to the dictates of polite society.
    Jeanine Basinger (b. 1936)

We attempt to remember our collective American childhood, the way it was, but what we often remember is a combination of real past, pieces reshaped by bitterness and love, and, of course, the video past—the portrayals of family life on such television programs as “Leave it to Beaver” and “Father Knows Best” and all the rest.
    Richard Louv (20th century)
