The flag of Syria (Arabic: علم سوريا) is a red, white and black tricolour with two green stars. It was adopted in 1958 with the establishment of the United Arab Republic and abandoned in 1961 with dissolution of this state. On 30 March 1980 it was readopted by President Hafez al-Assad, to show Syria's commitment to the Arab unity. Red colour represents the struggle and sacrifice for freedom, white symbolises peace and black signifies the dark colonial past, while gree colour of the stars is to restore the missing pan-Arab colour. The current flag is the longest used flag of Syria. Flags of Iraq, Egypt, Sudan and Yemen are very similar to the Syrian flag.

Famous quotes containing the words flag of, flag and/or syria:
“Swift blazing flag of the regiment,
Eagle with crest of red and gold,
These men were born to drill and die.
Point for them the virtue of slaughter,
Make plain to them the excellence of killing
And a field where a thousand corpses lie.”
—Stephen Crane (18711900)
“Hath not the morning dawned with added light?
And shall not evening call another star
Out of the infinite regions of the night,
To mark this day in Heaven? At last, we are
A nation among nations; and the world
Shall soon behold in many a distant port
Another flag unfurled!”
—Henry Timrod (18281867)
