First Barbary War - Monument

Monument

The Tripoli Monument, the oldest military monument in the U.S., honors the heroes of the First Barbary War: Master Commandant Richard Somers, Lieutenant James Caldwell, James Decatur (brother of Stephen Decatur), Henry Wadsworth, Joseph Israel and John Dorsey. Originally known as the Naval Monument, it was carved of Carrara marble in Italy in 1806 and brought to the U.S. as ballast on board the USS Constitution ("Old Ironsides"). From its original location in the Washington Navy Yard, it was moved to the west terrace of the national Capitol and finally, in 1860, to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Recognition of the Sicilian and Neapolitan serving aboard US Ships, Sicilian gunboats, and those who served with General Eaton are listed here.

Men Serving On Sicilian Gunboats and Mortar Boats

Here are the names of the gunners, sailors, lance corporals (appuntadores), and others serving on the Sicilian gunboats, and mortar boats; each craft was commanded by an American officer who no doubt had a dragoman (interpreter) along side him, but those names are not listed.

Greek and Italian volunteers with General Eaton in his expedition to Derne, Tripoli 1804-1805

The company of Greeks and Italians and 500 Mamelukes, Arabs, and Beduians trekked 500 miles through the Lybian desert then, supported by naval gunfire, attacked the fort. The marines planted the US flag on the wall after a three hour battle and Derne surrended. This brought an end to the War with Tripoli.

Famous quotes containing the word monument:

The volatile truth of our words should continually betray the inadequacy of the residual statement. Their truth is instantly translated; its literal monument alone remains.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The monument of death will outlast the memory of the dead. The Pyramids do not tell the tale which was confided to them; the living fact commemorates itself.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I hope there will be no effort to put up a shaft or any monument of that sort in memory of me or of the other women who have given themselves to our work. The best kind of a memorial would be a school where girls could be taught everything useful that would help them to earn an honorable livelihood; where they could learn to do anything they were capable of, just as boys can. I would like to have lived to see such a school as that in every great city of the United States.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)
