The Brazilian Federal Police is essentially run by Police Commissioners (Delegados de Polícia Federal), who command investigations and overall manage manage the Agency. Forensic specialists (Peritos Criminais Federais) have full autonomy over the technical aspects of their area of expertise, but not over investigations per se. Commissioners also delegate tasks to Agents (Agentes de Polícia Federal), Notary Agents (Escrivães de Polícia Federal) and fingerprints specialists (Papiloscopistas Policiais Federais), especially field missions and responsibility over apprehended goods.

A Bachelor of Law degree is required for candidates to apply for a position as Commissioners, since they perform tasks similar in importance and complexity to those of a judge. No previous police experience is required. Candidates applying for a position as Agent, Notary Agent and fingerprints specialist require a bachelor degree in any area. Candidates applying for Forensics specialists should have specific degrees, depending on their area of expertise, such as Civil Engineering, Veterinary, Accounting and Chemistry degrees.

Admission tests for the Federal Police have one of the highest candidates per spot ratio in the Country, especially for the higher positions such as Commissioners and Forensics Specialists, who can earn $130,000+ per year at the end of the career.

Famous quotes containing the word organization:

When a man’s partner’s killed, he’s supposed to do something about it. It doesn’t make any difference what you thought of him, he was your partner and you’re supposed to do something about it. As it happens, we’re in the detective business; well, when one of your organization gets killed, it’s, it’s bad business to let the killer get away with it. Bad all around. Bad for every detective everywhere.
    John Huston (1906–1987)

Unless a group of workers know their work is under surveillance, that they are being rated as fairly as human beings, with the fallibility that goes with human judgment, can rate them, and that at least an attempt is made to measure their worth to an organization in relative terms, they are likely to sink back on length of service as the sole reason for retention and promotion.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

In any great organization it is far, far safer to be wrong with the majority than to be right alone.
    John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)
