The total population of Farah province is about 925,016, which is predominately a rural and nomadic society. About 482,400 are settled while the remaining are the Kuchi nomads. The following ethnic groups live in the province: Pashtun (80%), Tajik, Baloch, Aimak and Hazara. The primary Pashtun tribes in Farah province are the Alizay, Nurzai, and Barakzai.

All inhabitants follow Islam, with majority being Sunni while the Hazaras are mostly Shias. The languages spoken in the province are Dari (Persian), Pashto, Balochi.
