Fairchild C-123 Provider - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

A C-123K (54-709), N709RR (since destroyed in a crash in 2010) was prominently featured in the action film Con Air (1997); other C-123s appeared in Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Operation Dumbo Drop (1995) and Air America (1990). Each of these aircraft was previously used for spraying Agent Orange in Vietnam, and sold by the Air Force and the General Services Administration before precautions were established to prohibit the surplus sale of such toxic-contaminated aircraft.

Filmmakers frequently use the C-123 to represent the much larger, four-engine Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Another prominent use of a C-123 is seen in the action film Die Hard 2 (1990), where two pods with fake propellers were added to the wings to make the aircraft resemble a C-130. The surreal "touch" is the addition of ejection seats for the pilots, one of which the movie“s main character uses to exit the aircraft on the ground.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

Like other secret lovers, many speak mockingly about popular culture to conceal their passion for it.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

If our entertainment culture seems debased and unsatisfying, the hope is that our children will create something of greater worth. But it is as if we expect them to create out of nothing, like God, for the encouragement of creativity is in the popular mind, opposed to instruction. There is little sense that creativity must grow out of tradition, even when it is critical of that tradition, and children are scarcely being given the materials on which their creativity could work
    C. John Sommerville (20th century)

We belong to an age whose culture is in danger of perishing through the means to culture.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
