There are six classically defined facial expressions:

  • Joy
  • Surprise
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Disgust
  • Sadness

Some other examples of feelings that can be expressed are:

  • Concentration
  • Confusion
  • Contempt
  • Desire
  • Excitement
  • Empathy
  • Flirt
  • Frustration
  • Glaring
  • Happiness
  • Love
  • Snarl, mainly involving the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle
