Extraterrestrial Skies - The Moon

The Moon

The Moon has no atmosphere, so its sky is always black. However, the Sun is so bright that it is impossible to see stars during the daytime, unless the observer is well shielded from sunlight (direct or reflected from the ground). The Moon has a southern polar star, δ Doradus, a magnitude 4.34 star. It is better aligned than Earth's Polaris (α Ursae Minoris), but much fainter.

Famous quotes containing the word moon:

    The moon is a sow
    and grunts in my throat
Her great shining shines through me
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

It becomes the moralist, too, to inquire what man might do to improve and beautify the system; what to make the stars shine more brightly, the sun more cheery and joyous, the moon more placid and content.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
