Purpose
Exit polls are also used to collect demographic data about voters and to find out why they voted as they did. Since actual votes are cast anonymously, polling is the only way of collecting this information.
Exit polls have historically and throughout the world been used as a check against and rough indicator of the degree of election fraud. Some examples of this include the Venezuelan recall referendum, 2004, and the Ukrainian presidential election, 2004.

Famous quotes containing the word purpose:
“It is my purpose to disclose the mystery at once, and to ask you to look for your interest, should you choose to go on with my chronicle, simply in the conduct of my persons, during this disclosure to others.”
—Anthony Trollope (18151882)
“In using the strong hand, as now compelled to do, the government has a difficult duty to perform. At the very best, it will by turns do both too little and too much. It can properly have no motive of revenge, no purpose to punish merely for punishments sake. While we must, by all available means, prevent the overthrow of the government, we should avoid planting and cultivating too many thorns in the bosom of society.”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
“As the purpose of comedy is to correct the vices of men, I see no reason why anyone should be exempt.”
—Molière [Jean Baptiste Poquelin] (16221673)
