Famous quotes containing the words steam engine, star, class, steam and/or engine:

Now that the steam engine rules the world, a title is an absurdity, still I am all dressed up in this title. It will crush me if I do not support it. The title attracts attention to myself.
    Stendhal [Marie Henri Beyle] (1783–1842)

Fear not: that ultimate Star is frail,
    only a flake of snow,
    whirled in His breath.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

Indeed, there are no easy correlations between parental ideology, class or race and “successful” child development. Many children the world over have revealed a kind of toughness and plasticity that make the determined efforts of some parents to spare their children the slightest pain seem ironic.
    Robert Coles (20th century)

    Blotting the sun
    Stinging the eyes.
    The hot seeds steam underground
    still alive.
    Gary Snyder (b. 1930)

The machine unmakes the man. Now that the machine is perfect, the engineer is nobody. Every new step in improving the engine restricts one more act of the engineer,—unteaches him.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
