Famous quotes containing the words evangelical, free, church and/or america:

Chastity is a monkish and evangelical superstition, a greater foe to natural temperance even than unintellectual sensuality.
    Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792–1822)

We placed the wreaths upon the splended granite sarcophagus, and at its feet, and felt that only the earthly robe we loved so much was there. Victoria (1819–1901)

I have a good eye, uncle; I can see a church by daylight.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

To be black and an intellectual in America is to live in a box.... On the box is a label, not of my own choosing.
    Stephen Carter (b. 1954)
