Taxonomy
The Eurasian Woodcock was given its current scientific name by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae in 1758. The binomial name is derived from the Greek skolopax, meaning 'woodcock', and Latin rusticus ('rural') and colere ('to live'). The species is monotypic and its closest relatives are the other woodcocks in the genus Scolopax.
