Personal
Honecker married Edith Baumann in 1950 and divorced her in 1953. They had a daughter, Erika (b. 1950). In 1953 he married Margot Feist and they remained married until his death. They had a daughter, Sonja, born in 1952. Margot Honecker served for more than 20 years as the GDR Minister for People's Education.
It is claimed that Honecker was addicted to game hunting and was directly involved in the over-hunting of a number of native game species. Such was his passion that animals bred and reared in neighbouring communist countries had to be supplied for his regular hunting parties.

Famous quotes containing the word personal:
“Art is a concrete and personal and rather childish thing after allno matter what people do to graft it into science and make it sociological and psychological; it is no good at all unless it is let alone to be itselfa game of make-believe, or re-production, very exciting and delightful to people who have an ear for it or an eye for it.”
—Willa Cather (18731947)
“I would rather have as my patron a host of anonymous citizens digging into their own pockets for the price of a book or a magazine than a small body of enlightened and responsible men administering public funds. I would rather chance my personal vision of truth striking home here and there in the chaos of publication that exists than attempt to filter it through a few sets of official, honorably public-spirited scruples.”
—John Updike (b. 1932)
“Your children dont have equal talents now and they wont have equal opportunities later in life. You may be able to divide resources equally in childhood, but your best efforts wont succeed in shielding them from personal or physical crises. . . . Your heart will be broken a thousand times if you really expect to equalize your childrens happiness by striving to love them equally.”
—Marianne E. Neifert (20th century)
