The & has sometimes appeared at the end of the English alphabet, as in ByrhtferĂ°'s list of letters in 1011. Historically, the figure is a ligature for the letters Et. In English it is used to represent the word and and occasionally the Latin word et, as in the abbreviation &c (et cetera).
