Enewetak Atoll - Geography

Geography

Enewetak Atoll formed atop a seamount. The seamount was formed in the late Cretaceous (about 75.8 million years ago). This seamount is now about 4,600 feet (1,400 m) below sea level. The seamount is made of basalt, and its depth is due to a general subsidence of the entire region and not because of erosion.

Enewetak has a mean elevation above sea level of 10 feet (3.0 m).

Famous quotes containing the word geography:

The California fever is not likely to take us off.... There is neither romance nor glory in digging for gold after the manner of the pictures in the geography of diamond washing in Brazil.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

The totality of our so-called knowledge or beliefs, from the most casual matters of geography and history to the profoundest laws of atomic physics or even of pure mathematics and logic, is a man-made fabric which impinges on experience only along the edges. Or, to change the figure, total science is like a field of force whose boundary conditions are experience.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)

Yet America is a poem in our eyes; its ample geography dazzles the imagination, and it will not wait long for metres.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
